Vantage to Offer WattStopper Miro as Enspire Wireless Lighting System
Vantage/Legrand says Zigbee system is "still on the table," but Miro is "an existing and proven system" in the Legrand family.
01.30.2008 — Vantage/Legrand, a leading manufacturer of lighting control and home automation systems, is rolling out the Enspire line of wireless control systems, borrowed from sister company Watt Stopper/Legrand.
The product is a re-badged version of Miro, an RF lighting control system introduced by sister company Watt Stopper/Legrand in 2004. Utilizing Watt Stopper’s own frequency-agile (902-928 MHz) two-way RF protocol, devices on the network can communicate with each other directly, no central controller required.
We have lauded Miro in the past for its sleek European styling, but Watt Stopper had troubles marketing the product to the custom channel. The company historically has sold its lighting controls through commercial markets, leaving basic occupancy sensors and timers for residential channels.
Perhaps Vantage, with its 650ish established dealers, will have better luck with it.
fact, Vantage has planned over the past few years to launch a relatively low-cost lighting control system a la Miro. In September 2006 the company showed a concept ”Mid-Market Control” system that was expected to cost about one-third the price of Vantage’s existing systems, said Vantage vice president of sales Bob Long back then.

That system, however, was going to utilize the Zigbee RF mesh-networking control protocol. Vantage has indicated in the past that it was waiting until Zigbee became a real “standard” before it would develop compatible products. Currently, each manufacturer implements its own versions of Zigbee, with little or no interoperability across brands.
“Miro seemed like the logical direction to go since it was an existing and proven system that already existed within the Legrand family,” says Vantage spokesperson Derek Jensen. “Miro is a reliable lighting control product with a very simple-to-program interface. It provided a great platform for launching Enspire.”
Jensen adds, “Zigbee is still on the table. We expect to include it in future releases as we build up the Enspire line.”
On Legrand Channels
While Vantage will manage the residential distribution of Miro/Enspire through its dealer channel, WattStopper will continue to sell the Miro system through its commercial network.
The fact that Vantage would take over Miro’s residential distribution is no big surprise. Parent Legrand has maintained that it would take advantage of channel synergies across its brands, which now include – in addition to Vantage and WattStopper – On-Q, UStec, Pass & Seymour, Wiremold and Ortronics.
Just a few weeks ago, Vantage began marketing the high-end ProLAN series of structured wiring cabinets from UStec – a natural fit for Vantage dealers who tend to serve high-end homes.
Interestingly, it was On-Q that first salivated over Miro back in 2005 when Vantage acquired the structured-wiring manufacturer. On-Q CEO Doug Fikse suggested that Miro might complement On-Q’s hardwired products. “This [the acquisition] gives us the ability to tap into resources for lighting control,” he said.
In mid-2007, Legrand restructured its operations around market segments, encouraging sales groups to sell multiple Legrand brands to specific markets. One Legrand group would push sales to commercial markets, another to homebuilder markets, and yet another to installing dealers, distributors and other low-voltage professionals.
“We’re trying to leverage products and channels that we have, so we don’t duplicate nine different companies’ products and channels,” said Fikse.
About Miro
Miro is a fairly comprehensive wireless line with a variety of keypads, dimmers and appliance modules available in both Architectural (European) and Decora styles. The line also includes automation modules for communicating via IR, RS-232 or relay with third-party systems.
Since it requires no central controller (unlike Vantage’s own RadioLink system), Miro/Enspire makes sense for small and large systems alike. Up to 1,000 devices are supported.
When I asked a couple of years ago, Miro dimmers and controllers were retailing for about $150 each.
Vantage says it will start off selling just lighting-control components under the Enspire brand, and in the future will offer A/V and home theater controls, environmental controls, distributed audio and a design and programming tool.
